Exhibition Idea

After visiting the Whitworth Art Gallery to take inspiration on how other artists are showing their work to the public, I have come away from it thinking that I want to create and installation piece to make the audience more involved with the piece and thus the hypothetical waste they have forgotten once belonged to them.

I began thinking about different ways I could display my work in this way which included getting a pile of the scrap metal which can be seen in some of my final shoot photographs and projecting onto it. Another idea I have was getting a car bonnet and projecting my image onto that, the reason for doing this is that I will have brought something physical into the space that was once waste and is not being used to help promote change in our mentality about waste.

My final idea and the one I am going to go with after talking it through with my group and tutor, is to get a fridge somehow either by buying one or renting, and then inside the fridge I will hang one image (which can be seen below). The reason for doing this is that I want the viewer to have a connection with the piece before understanding its purpose. I have used a fridge because it is an item nearly everyone uses everyday of their lives so they are very use to seeing one. They then have to walk over to the fridge and actually open the door to see whats inside, which is another way I have gained their connection and attention to my piece. Inside is one single image (seen below) which shows where that fridge would end up if you were to simply throw it away.
The reason for choosing this image is for a handful of reasons: firstly it shows a landscape that is entirely made up of waste items, including household radiators, fridges and cookers, so the viewer should already be able to see a connection between the image and the new fridge that surrounds it. Also due to the images large scale I think its really good at impacting the viewer, because many people will have never seen a real landscape image that is made up entirely of waste. Furthermore the water element in the foreground means the viewer can't place them in the photograph which makes them feel like they are looking into the future of that fridge, which should also hopefully make them think about what happens to their own waste when they throw it out. Another reason is that the image is of a portrait format so I should be able to print off a pretty big version of it and have it still fit suspended inside the fridge easily.
I think for my final image I am going to mount it on board but remove all of the boarders from the image that usually frame it, this is because I want the fridge to act as my frame.

I think that if I can pull this idea off well, it will really represent what my work is all about as  a whole and also should force the audience to think about their own wastage through the use of getting them involved with the artwork.
