Whitworth Art Gallery

After photographing my final images, some of these will be used in my exhibition but I still need to figure out how to display my work. So I decided to visit the newly opened Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester to get some inspiration from the pieces that are displayed within.

I spent quite a while walking around the different exhibitions that were on show and the two that stood out for me the most were firstly Cai Guo-Qiang's 'Unmanned Nature' and secondly Mary Kelly's 'Multi-Story House'.

The reason I take great inspiration from the unmanned nature series is due to its massive scale. Because the piece is so large I feel that it really impacts the viewer take make them realise how interesting his work actually is. This has made me think hard about considering to produce and exhibition piece thats reflects the scale of our waste problem in the UK, I think as a piece this makes great sense and really represents my project well.

The second exhibition piece that I thought was really inspiring for my exhibition was the multi-story house, the reason I loved this piece so much was firstly that the idea and house is incredibly simple. It also mixes the point of the piece with the actual structure of a house, thus mixing the meaning and how its represented together. Also I think the fact that it lights up in the middle works really well to highlight to the audience the importance of viewing this piece in the gallery. But lastly and the most important reason is that you can walk inside of it. I think this is really important because a lot of the times when you go to art gallery you have to be quite and careful around the pieces but the fact that you can interact with this piece and go inside it means that you feel a lot more connected to it.

This makes me think that maybe for my exhibition piece I should create an installation piece instead of just hanging photographs on the wall. Because then it will make the viewer feel a lot more connected to the actual work, which will benefit my idea because its all about how we don't connect ourselves with our waste after we throw it away. So it would be better to have the audience interact with the work and make them understand  our problem and to hopefully make them think about it more.
