Fifth Shoot

After looking at 'Oil' a project produced by the photographer Edward Burtynsky I have decided to re-visit and re-focus my gaze to the piles of cars that I photographed at the second scrapyard which was much larger than the first. I'm hoping that through repetition and scale I will produce images that show the great impact of waste on the environment.

This works well to show the height of the piles and thus how large it is in comparison to the trees behind it which are struggling to show themselves through the mass of cars. This makes the viewer feel like the masses of car waste is overpowering the natural order.

Compared to the first two images that I have shown this image works a lot better to show the same techniques as Burtynsky's work. This is because the same shapes are repeated throughout the composition, and because of angling, the cars take up nearly the whole of the frame which makes the scale look very large and over empowering.

These two images above and below, both use Burtynsky's technique of repetition and scale to try to portray to the viewer how large the problem with waste is in our country. Also in both images I have not included the floor, which means that the viewer cannot place themselves in the photograph which means that they have no idea how tall the piles are.

Even though in this image I have photographed the floor so the viewer can place them selves in the image, they don't have an idea of how tall the pile of cars goes, which thus creates an image that looks very crowded and overpowering.

I think the shoot went well, some of the images worked how I wanted them to but the others didn't as much. The place itself creates images that are really interesting to look at though due to how random it looks to have piles and piles of cars that reach high up into the sky.
Due to the shapes of all cars being different, I haven't been able to recreate the same kind of repetition that is seen in Burtynsky's work but I think that I have managed to do this a little bit. I will definitely keep his inspiration, as well as all the photographers so far, in mind when doing my next shoot. I think due to me not being able to access the whole site due to health and safety restrictions, I am next going to document a larger scrap/waste site in Coventry.
